Wilco tickets are available now for their World Tour 2010. The great alternative rock band are one of the best live acts in the world today and are not to be missed. The Grammy Award winning band is led by former Uncle Tupelo member Jeff Tweedy and feature skronk guitar great Nels Cline. You can catch the band in Helsinki at the Kultuuritalo, in Tampere, Finland at the Pakkahuone, at the Cirkus in Stockholm, Sentrum Scene in Oslo and Musikhuset in Denmark. Wilco will also play the great Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona this year.
Recent Wilco concerts have had Jeff Tweedy strolling out on stage alone with an acoustic guitar. He starts strumming "Someone Else's Song," while slowly being joined onstage by the other band members, one by one taking their parts in the song. By the end they are rocking a fully fleshed out version after starting bare and skeletal. The effect is powerful and a wonderful opening to the show. One can expect a two-hour- plus set of songs from all phases of Wilco, from "Sunken Treasure" to "Being There" to the brand new "Bull Back Nova," a nearly psychotic rocker that will have you shaking your head in wonder. Most sets feature a heavy dose of their 2002 masterpiece,"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," which Britain's Q Magazine named one of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Wilco are a band that is often lumped in to the alt-country or alt-rock or alt-whatever scene. But the truth is that Wilco are one of the finest bands playing today, stubbornly refusing to submit to anyone else's categorizing. Their songs have an abundance of pop hooks. They have a veritable Rock God in guitarist Nels Cline. They are equally influenced by the early punk band Television as well as obscure folk great Bill Fay. Their songs can harken back to the best Sixties rock, John Cale, The Band, and Skip Spence. The Beach Boys later material is also an important influence. Also, perhaps only subtly, Wilco is influenced by free jazz.
Wilco were borne of the late Uncle Tupelo, a ferocious country rock band that Tweedy and Jay Farrar formed in their native St. Louis. When that band split up in 1994, Jay Farrar formed Son Volt and Tweedy created Wilco. Wilco has had a turbulent membership. Tweedy and bassist John Stirrat are the only original members. Drummer Glenn Kotche joined after participating in the "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" sessions. Nels Cline, frequent collaborator with Carla Bozulich (Scarnella, The Geraldine Fibbers), joined for the 2005 tour which resulted in the live album "Kicking Television." He stayed on for 2007's "Sky Blue Sky" and remains today. Member Jay Bennett died at his home in May, 2009.
Wilco have released eight albums in their career, beginning with 1995's "A.M." They were embroiled in controversy when their record company, Reprise, refused to release "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" in 2001, claiming it was commercial suicide. They were "asked to leave the label." Wilco managed to buy the master tapes from Reprise after some negotiation. They shopped it around and signed to Nonesuch Records, who were happy to release it. And the rest is history. (Interestingly, both Reprise and Nonesuch are subsidiaries of Time Warner.)
Wilco released their seventh album, "Wilco (The Album)" in June 2009 to rave reviews. Wilco played several shows with the singer Feist and collaborated on the song "You and I" on the Late Show with David Letterman. Wilco have been on tour non-stop since the album's release.
