In 2009, the U.S. team won a third straight trophy. The last time Great Britain & Ireland won this event was at Ganton Golf Club in 2003, which was the last of a three-in-a-row streak for the United Kingdom. America has enjoyed a fairly lop-sided overall victory ratio, having won from 1922 to 1938 and from 1947 to 1969 and 1973 to 1987! Only recently has the United Kingdom been victorious, winning slightly less than fifty percent of the events since 1989. Some of the great clubs that have enjoyed hosting this popular amateur event include: National Golf Links of America, Old Course at St. Andrews, Garden City Golf Club, Royal St. George's Golf Club, The Country Club, Pine Valley Golf Club, Winged Foot, The Minikahda, Muirfield, Seattle Golf Club, Turnberry, Baltimore Country Club, Milwaukee Country Club, Shinnecock Hills, Cypress Point Club, Sunningdale, Portmarnock, Interlachen, Royal Porthcawl, Quaker Ridge, Nairn Golf Club, Ocean Forest, Chicago Golf Club, Merion Golf Club in 2009, and Royal Aberdeen Golf Club will host in 2011.

It began as a tournament solely between United Kingdom and the United States. It has stayed that way since becoming organized by the R&A and becoming part of the USGA. There has been no move or desire on the part of its organizers to change invitations to include all European nations. The Walker Cup is played every odd numbered year. Since 1922, the Walker Cup trophy has been awarded biennially to the winner of a competition between U.S. and Britain, keeping its current title, which is in honor of the event's original organizer. George Walker was the President of the USGA at the time of the competition's creation.
