Volvo also had a stint with a tournament called the German Open. It was an Open that went back to 1911. Harry Vardon and John Henry Taylor helped create fame and renown for both the tournament and its sponsor. Percy Alliss won the Open five times! But many great memories come from that highly sporadic tournament. No doubt, Volvo learned some valuable sponsorship lessons from the old German Open. Indeed, after several years of being out of commission, the German Open rebounded in the 80s. Bernhard Langer tied the long-held record of Alliss, proving he was Germany's best golfer since the 1920s.

The golf course at the Volvo Classic is the Finca Cortesín Golf Club in Casares. Previously Wentworth Club was its host (in London). Piccadilly, HSBC, Cisco, Toyota, and Suntory also have held previous sponsorships. Oddly, this tournament was the brainchild of a sports agent. Mark McCormack, its founder, used it to showcase talent, add clients, and to set-up a ranking system. Very consistently this tournament has had great fields. The competition is top-notch and the caliber of field is highly regarded. Even though this had never been an official PGA tournament, it was so popular with the players that it is known as one of the PGA's top events.
