A golf tournament like this can only be found in Texas! Superlatives are not commonplace among golfers, but justifiable here. This tournament dates back to 1922. Since the San Antonio firm Valero took-over sponsorship, this part of the PGA tour has been getting a bigger name for itself: big-name golfers, big huge courses, and a big Texas nod of approval. Who are some past big-name players to have won here? Arnold Palmer! Sam Snead! Ben Hogan!
Texas does have a number of great courses. Because of the terrain and varying weather conditions, concessions need to be made on some courses. But, because, concession is not a normally chosen route for most Texans, golf courses here tend to fight hard to keep their individuality. The threadbare sections and wooded sections vary throughout courses in the State. At the Resort Course there does not seem to be any architectural limitations to the layout. Bunkers and mounds traverse nicely up and down the course. Little jackrabbit jaunts, twisty doglegs, and slick greens make this a difficult and rewarding course to both watch and play.
The Valero is played at the Resort Course at the La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio. It is the same course where the PGA tour record 254 on a 72-hole match happened in 2003 by Tommy Armour. This event has always been based in San Antonio. Much of its history was spent being called the Texas Open; it was played at Brackenridge, Woodlake, or Oak Hills. It recently became part of the PGA Fall Series Tour; subsequently'its purse has rocketed to $6 million with a million dollar winner's check.
