The 360Ëš Tour begins with "Space Oddity" floating over the PA system as the band hustle on stage. The set design can only be described as: epoch. The show explores the musical history of the band and subdivides each phase of the band into a cosmic measurement of the times from which the music was born. The word "monstrous" hardly does justice to to the frighteningly daunting size of the galaxy that surrounds the circular stage from which U2 performs. The stage is a spaceship. Then, U2 kicks into the single "Breathe." Bono runs up and down an oval ramp system that surrounds the stage, singing in perfect form. Adam Clayton is playing very solid bass guitar lines for this tour, adding a touch more Paul McCartney to his counter melody runs. The Edge has been totally exploring a truer rock and roll sound. Edge's landscaping delay guitar effect still creates its own Phil Spector Wall of Sound, as if he has a microchip of Larry Levine in his Gibson Explorer. But, there is a grittiness and "edge" being showcased in his sound that moves beyond repeated sparse-note arpeggio and into the realm of pure rock and roll more than any tour thus far. It is as if he has added a little T-Bone Burnett on top of his Brian Eno / Daniel Lanois continuum.
What is the 360 degree Tour like? It has been reviewed that 360 degree Tour is a cross between Joshua Tree Tour and ZOOTV Tour, which is a fair assessment. The sound is clean and the song choice is measuredly, poignantly full of evocation, like Joshua Tree Tour. And, the stage, lights, and theme are all full-on bombastic fun, just like ZOOTV Tour. "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," "Elevation," "Get On Your Boots," "The Unforgettable Fire," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "MLK," "One," "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)," "Magnificent," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday," are all part of the 360Ëš Tour's setlist. Bono has been singing snippets of cover tunes, adding them as a coda at the end of one of U2's own compositions. For example, "One" segues into "Amazing Grace." "Beautiful Day" segues into "Blackbird," a song off The White Album by the Beatles. And, "Bad" segues into "Fool To Cry," a Rolling Stones tune off of their "Black and Blue" album. There are several examples of this throughout the evening. The fact that these ad led snippets exist is cause for much fan speculation. It is a fun way to introduce variation into the setlist. There is something lazy about not completely going into the full song, especially a short one like "Norwegian Wood," by the Beatles (off "Rubber Soul" LP). There is a certain Grateful Dead dynamic about homage that deludedly confounds U2. But, the only people who seem to mind about the snippets are the fans who love and respect U2 enough to care. Overall the audience seems thrilled to be flashing back to a moment or tune from the past or a brief minute. Since time and space is the theme of the tour, it all fits together smashingly. U2 takes risks and wear their heart on their sleeve, easy targets for criticism because of their constant attempt to exude truth and honor the things, songs, and people that they adore. U2 is playing "With or Without You." Play it safe; buy a ticket now; it will be way better "with you" than "without." C'mon, don't miss the greatest rock and roll band in the world: U2.
U2 has the best track record of any mega-huge rock band ever. U2 tours are one of a kind. This new 360Ëš Tour especially, Vertigo, Elevation, POPMART, ZOOTV, Lovetown, Joshua Tree, 1986's Amnesty International's Conspiracy of Hope, The Unforgettable Fire Tour, and War Tour have all been bills of immense professionalism, spectacle, heart, and soul.
