Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers evolved from his earlier band from Florida, the Gainsville rock band Mudcrutch. After they disbanded in 1975, Mudcrutch members Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench formed The Heartbreakers. "Tom Petty and" was added to the bands name to avoid confusion with former New York Dolls member Johnny Thunders. His new band was dubbed the Heartbreakers around the same time. The album "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" was released in 1976. It was very slow to take off in the United States, but created a sensation in England. Word filtered back to the States, and overnight, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were a new smash rock group. Their next album, 1978's "You're Gonna Get It!" was their first Gold record in America and the band was truly on their way to the top. 1979's "Damn the Torpedoes" was a multi-Platinum smash hit and there was no looking back.
