The Mentalist is magician / performer Gerry McCambridge. What is a 'mentalist' you ask? Someone who reads the minds of his audience as part of his magic act. Performing magic is quite a feat in itself, but how does somebody read your mind? You just have to see The Mentalist to believe him.
Gerry McCambridge is from Long Island, and he performed his first magic show at the age of 12. Where a lot of magicians will tell you they first got hooked from seeing their first card trick, and McCambridge did indeed get a magic kit for Christmas when he was eight.
But adding to his future career, McCambridge's father was also a detective, and from his father he learned interrogation and interview techniques he's been able to apply to his magic act.
After McCambridge saw legendary magician Doug Henning live when he was twelve, he knew for certain he wanted to be a magician himself. McCambridge dove into the world of magic, and learned everything he could about his craft. It absolutely paid off big-time because Gerry McCambridge has performed as a mentalist magician for over twenty years now.
McCambridge performed a number of private events for Fortune 500 companies like AT&T, Motorola, American Express, and many more, which lead to The Mentalist performing for major celebrities.
In addition to his world-wide fanbase, Gerry McCambridge has a major following among celebrities and the list of stars he's performed for include Donald Trump, Courtney Cox, Howard Stern, Lisa Kudrow, Tim Burton, Dennis Miller, David Spade, and Carrie Fisher.
2004 was a major year for The Mentalist. He won an award from the Psychic Entertainers Association, and won again the following year for 'Mentalist of the Year.' He also did an NBC special in 2004 that brought in over six million viewers, and was also a hit performing off-Broadway in New York before he went on to Vegas.
Once he went on to Vegas, Las Vegas Review named The Mentalist 'Best Magician' in 2007, and The Mentalist was also voted 'Top 10 Absoultey Have to See' shows in Las Vegas Review Journal.
The Mentalist has perfomed in Vegas for over five years, and has put on over a thousand shows, which makes him the longest running Mentalist act in Vegas history. The Mentalist also won the Merlin Award in 2008 from The International Magicians Society, another major accomplishment in his incredible career.
One review of The Mentalists' Vegas act states, 'No lights, dancers or fog machines here. The Mentalist makes a simple promise to 'screw with your mind' and successfully does so. And best yet, as he twists reality, you will enjoy the experience.'
One fan writing online remarked, 'This show is one of those times when you will walk away scratching your head asking, 'How did he do that,'' which is a major criteria for any great magic show. How does he do it? You won't be able to figure it out, even when you see him up close in person, which is why The Mentalist is so good at what he does.
