In 2010, the Honda Classic had an attendance record'”over 100,00 people attended. It has become Palm Beach County's largest sporting event. Always popular, this event began as Jackie Gleason's Inverrary Classic, changing sponsors to AMC, then, finally, Honda. One can only imagine how much bigger it might be, if played on a different month. But Honda seems to thrive on the competition. And just because of its under-rated status, it is a deceptively difficult match. Even for the biggest of golfing greats, skipping or doing poorly at the Honda can affect the whole season.

This tournament has been around since 1972. Tom Weiskopf won its first championship, back when it was the Gleason-Iverray Classic. Bruce Lietzke won the first officially titled Honda Classic in 1984, two-years after Honda became partial sponsors, the first year they held sole sponsorship. So Honda is nearing their 30th year as a host of this tournament. And the tournament has been around nearly forty.

Many fans believe this tournament is played at too competitive of a time. Do more popular golf matches eclipse it? Well, it is fair to say that a few golfers have skipped it because of the loaded spring schedules that they have had to face. The PGA season is thick with celebrated Florida golf events in the spring: Bay Hill Invitational, the CA Championship, etc. If you venture north a little to Georgia, there is also the Masters Tournament, played during the same time of year. But, the Honda does better than any tourney of its kind could dream to accomplish, against such heavy competition.
