Super Bowl week is the week that leads up to the National Football League's (NFL) Championship game called the Super Bowl and numbered using Roman numerals. The Super Bowl sees the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship games that are held two weeks before the Super Bowl game. These games are usually hard fought and can in some ways be the hardest games of the seasons for the teams involved. In the early years of the merged NFL the Conference Championships were often much more interesting games than the Super Bowl. The two Conference Champions played rivals in truly memorable games and then went on to in many cases to a blow out in the Super Bowl. Sometimes they got blown out and other times they did the exploding. Because of the effort necessary to get past some Conference play the teams just had nothing left to give for the Super Bowl.
With the parity that has been the goal of the NFL for the last decades the games are getting to be less and less predictable, always a good thing, and more competitive, a great thing. In the last few years the playoffs have seen less blow outs and the Super Bowl has been in doubt as to the winner until the last quarter, sometimes the last few seconds of the last quarter. Exciting games means more viewers and more viewers means more revenue for the broadcasters and the NFL.
Since some people tune in to watch just the Super Bowl, which have become a must see for even non-sports fans, keeping the game interesting is not always a concern for them. But for true fans of the sport, regardless of whether 'your team' is in it, the Super Bowl should be a contest of the best the league can produce.
