The Chevron has never been an official money tournament. It has been recognized, unofficially, since its days as the Target World Challenge. Since 2009, the PGA has also allowed the tournament to offer "official world golf ranking points." The four Majors winners are invited to this tournament, along with 14 golf pro peers. These other invitees are usually the top 10 in world ranking points, the defending Chevron Challenge champion, and two or three players selected by the tournament host or the next in world rank, if one of the top ten cannot attend. Invitation exemptions occur when rounding off the field.
All of the proceeds for this event go to charities defined by the host. And the tournament is known for not only raising huge amounts for charity but also for the attending players. This is a commonplace in the PGA. Many events of this nature have huge purses. This particular one is nearing the $6 million mark. Having a smaller field does however mean the individuals who win at the Chevron win big. First prize is nearing $1.5 million and last prize is nearly a hefty $200,000. Many of the PGA winners have donated their winnings over the years; many have also had their biggest money wins of their season here.
Tiger Woods, the event's host, has missed the last two, potentially three of these challenges, due to knee surgery, injury from an accident, and hiatus. The event takes place in December, normally at the Sherwood Country Club, a private 18-hole links at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountain range. It is a historic course, famous for being involved as the earliest host of the first televised golf matches in America. Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh won the last two championships. Tiger Woods won three out of the four years prior to his break from the tournament.
