Madison, Mississippi is an affluent part of the Jackson area. This year The Viking Classic is being played at the same time as the Ryder Cup, Sept. 27 '“ Oct. 3, 2011. This tournament has survived through tough times. It has been part of the Fall Series, which was good for the tournament'”to be an important part of the players' scramble to make the money list. Having been placed in the same time slot as the Presidents Cup one year, then the Ryder Cup this year, has been tough on this tournament. In 2009 it was cancelled. Whether that was due to weather and unplayable field conditions is possibly not the only reason. The huge 3.7 million dollar purse may have had a few backroom difficulties. The fact that the event was not given the honor of being rescheduled last year was a big concern for fans of the event. But, few were surprised to see it back on the PGA schedule for 2010. It is a resilient classic. It has been a PGA money event since 1994; before that it was an unofficial "satellite event," where the wins were not counted.
Annandale Golf Course is a sweet 4-star country club with 18 holes, 7,000 yards, and par 72. The slope rating is 136. The course rating is 75.5. In 2006, Jack Nicklaus finished his design additions and the course was opened to much fanfare. Katrina damaged the course on August 29, 2005. So Nicklaus suggested converting the grass to "Champion Berma," since the "Bentgrass" was damaged. This made the greens nice and firm, more durable in the incredibly long hot Mississippi summers.
