Paul Simon is a rare breed of songwriter, a cross between Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. That is not hyperbole. His tunes have the everyman quality of a Woody Guthrie sing-a-long, containing all of the urgency and themes of brotherhood present in all great folk songs. His melodies have, at times, the poppy quality of some of the more intricate of Beatles songs. There have been moments when it appeared Simon grew tired of celebrity and times when he has embraced it. Never was their any faint complaint in his writing about his own hardships unless he felt there was a universal theme to them. Never were his tunes sappy or sugary. Explorations musically in which he has submerged himself for last two decades have all been bold, starkly original, and ultimately fun. Paul Simon's music catalog rates with his contemporaries, the top of the best American writers of the last century. He knows how to write songs that the entire world embraces and upon hearing will not grow tired. Like John Lennon's "Imagine," Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a watershed moment, an example of a song that brought the whole world together in harmony of shared belief, feeling, and psalm.

The lead vocalist for "Bridge" was the main reason for much of the universal appeal of that song and many of the other Simon-penned gems. Art Garfunkel has the best tenor in the rock and roll world. Always on tune, always in perfect harmony, Garfunkel is peerless (except maybe David Crosby on a good day) when it comes to the ability to use his voice with complete control and diversity. Garfunkel's voice is a wonderful tool and he uses it with all the quiet restraint of a humble monk, until he unleashes it at the right time, allowing its soaring masculinity and deep operatic range to tingle every spine in the stadium. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gig, Garfunkel's vocal on the "The Sound of Silence" was the most soulful and breathtaking singing I have ever witnessed.
