The history of play in this championship is exciting to ponder. Craig Stadler shot 4-under in 2003. He beat Bob Gilder by four strokes. It was his third Champions Tour victory. He threw eagles, birdies, and a bogey at his final round, scrapping and scraping like he had done earlier that year at the B.C. Open.
SBC Championship winners, 2000-2005, include: Tewell, L. Nelson, Quigley, Stadler, McNulty, and Jay Haas, respectively. The recent AT&T Championship winners, ascending sequentially from the SBC to the present includes: Funk, Cook (twice in a row), and last year's champ Phil Blackmar.
First, Oak Hills Country Club is a Tillinghast-designed master-course. It is beautiful and challenging in a way that few other Texas clubs can claim. The short par four start, the deceptive par three at number 2, the spectacularly windy third hole, and the classic drive and pitch of #4 is not even the tip of the iceberg. 5, 6, and 7 contain risky fairways, improbable approaches, and doggone doglegs. 8 and 9 tempt the golfers to go for the green of suffer the consequences. That's just the first half of the course!
