San Jose Sharks Tickets

Hockey had been present in the Southern California area in one form or another prior to the first NHL expansion in 1967. A lack of ticket sales seemed to reflect its unsuccessful attempts to reach the general public. Located within range of hockey teams in Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose seemed to show promise. Pleayers were brought in from Canada to play in the California Hockey League although the league disbanded in 1930 mainly because it seemed that there were more players on the ice than ticket holders in the stands.

In 1948, the Pacific Coast Hockey League turned in a pro league but folded in 1950. The San Francisco Seals, a former pro team from Edmonton, Alberta merged into the Western Hockey League in 1961 and, by 1964, had taken home two consecutive titles. 1966 sent the team into their final year in the WHL with home games played at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

Now officially dubbed the San Jose Sharks, the fledgling organization drafted several promising players including Brian Hayward, Rob Zettler, and Arturs Irbe, among others. Jeff Hackett was selected, as well. The Sharks selected Pat Falloon, Ray Whitney and Sandis Ozolinsh in the 1991 Entry Draft. In the same period of time, general manager Jack Ferreira traded a minor league player and a draft pick of the year NHL veteran Doug Wilson, just before training camp began.

The San Jose Sharks closed their first season with a 6th place finish with a 17-58-5 record in the Smythe Division. Their second season only showed minor improvement but tickets were still a hot item in San Jose. Arturs Irbe posted the Sharks' first shutout win on November 17, 1992. Rob Gaudreau recorded the first hat trick in just his second NHL game on December 3, 1992, repeating himself four games later against rival Quebec.

The Sharks printed tickets for the post season playoffs in 1993. They were now housed in the San Jose Arena with a new coach manning the team. Kevin Constantine lead the team to setting another NHL record for the biggest single season turnaround - 58 points in all -and finshed in 3rd place which was initiated with a series the Red Wings, who saw the teeth of the Sharks and were chomped to bits in the final game of the series. Then they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in a vibrant 7 game series and were eliminated in a last minute minute power play by the Leafs.

In the following lockout shortened season the Sharks again made it to the post season, albeit in the final game of the season. In the first round they faced the Calgary Flames eliminating them in game seven. In the second round the Detroit Red Wings appeared, and not wanting to have a repeat of the previous season, the Wings dominated the Sharks in a 4 game sweep.

After a few years of restructuring that followed their defining series against the Maple Leafs, the 1997-98 season saw the Sharks return to winning form. Standouts Jeff Freisen, Owen Nolan and Patrick Marleau lead the team to a 4th place finish in the Pacific Division and a magic ticket back to the playoffs. They were eliminated in the seventh game but most a strong record for the season.

The San Jose Sharks posted their best season in 1999 with 35 wins and 87 points, again cloed out the century holding 4th in the Pacific Division. In 7 games for the Conference Quarter Finals, they defeated the St. Louis Blues and then faced the Dallas Stars.

Having proven themselves time and time again as a contendor for the Stanley Cup, the San Jose Sharks always increase the value of any ticket to see them play NHL hockey.

The NHL saw its first expansion since 1942 and absorbed the Oakland Seals in 1967. The organization reprinted the tickets to read Cleveland Barons and moved in 1976.

Two decades later the owners of the Minnesota North Stars sold their franchise and it soon after moved to Dallas, Texas. In exchange, the NHL granted the them the right for to form an officially sanctioned expansion club. They entered the league in 1991 in the Bay area of Northern California. As was a popular way to ensure the sale of tickets to new fans, the name of the team was selected through a worldwide contest. After receiving almost 6,000 entries and at least 2,300 different names, owner George Gund announced that the team was to be based in San Jose to start in 1993 season.
