Rock of Ages is the creation of Chris D’Arienzo, and it is a “jukebox musical” featuring many hit songs from the eighties. Many music fans are nostalgic for the eighties, where many feel great pop songwriting was at its peak.
Back in the heyday of the ‘80’s, MTV and radio played great music, hair was big, and the tunes were usually just about having a good time. If you have a fond nostalgia for the music and the times, Rock of Ages is the musical for you.
Rock of Ages is a Def Leppard song, and being one of the biggest bands of the eighties, it clearly inspired the title of this musical. It is the story of an aspiring rocker named Drew Bowie who wants to follow his musical dream, and is in love with Sherrie (as in the ‘80’s hit “Oh Sherrie”). There is much more to the story than this, but why give away how so many great eighties songs weave an original rock opera.
With the over the top music and hair, the music of the eighties was an absolute natural for the Broadway stage. As Rock of Ages creator Chris D’Arienzo told broadwayworld.com, he wanted the play to “feel like a rock concert. On a concert tour, every city is made to feel like it is the best on tour."
And Rock of Ages producer Matt Weaver said he wants audiences to get up and dance, rock out, and flick their bics, a time honored arena rock tradition. "While some shows might kick you out for that behavior, at Rock of Ages you will get thrown out if you simply sit quietly in your seat!"
Rock of Ages includes such ‘80’s classics as “Sister Christian” written by Night Ranger, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” written by Twisted Sister, “Heaven” written by Warrant, “Waiting For a Girl Like You” written by Foreigner, and “Any Way You Want It” written by Journey.
Rock of Ages first opened in Los Angeles in 2006, then it opened in New York off-Broadway in 2008. Then Rock of Ages quickly went to Broadway, and soon would tour America, Canada, and Melbourne. Rock of Ages is also scheduled to be turned into a major motion picture by New Line Cinema.
Rock of Ages earned five Tony nominations, and in humorous honor of itself, Rock of Ages held the Golden Mullet Awards, which they called “Broadway’s fourth biggest night.
Rock of Ages is certainly in on the joke, and has a healthy sense of humor about itself. The New York Times called Rock of Ages, “a seriously silly, absurdly enjoyable arena-rock musical.” Another theater critic notes,”Even if you don’t like the ‘80s and its music, you will have a great night out, but if you go into the evening with a fondness for Whitesnake, Journey and their ilk, then you’ll probably think the whole thing is totally rad.”
