The Wit and Wisdom of Rita Rudner

Rita Rudner was originally going to be a ballet dancer, and she performed onstage for the shows Annie, Follies, and Mack and Mable. At 25, Rudner decided to become a comedienne, because the competition among comedians wasn't as fierce as it was among dancers then.

On Rudner's official website, her bio states that she 'applied the same learning techniques she had acquired as a dancer to comedy.' She listened to comedy routines from her favorite funny people, including Woody Allen, Bob Newhart and Jack Benny, and learned from listening how jokes and routines are constructed.

Rita Rudner's Road to Vegas

Rudner's first break was, like for many comedians, on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, in early 1988. Rudner's comedy specials include Rita Rudner: Born to Be Mild, Rita Rudner: Married Without Children both for HBO, then Rita Rudner Live From Las Vegas for PBS. Rudner has headlined Carnegie Hall three times, Universal Amphitheater in L.A. twice, and she was also a big hit on headline tours of Australia and England.

Rudner was invited to perform in Vegas when a play from Paris hadn't yet arrived, and there was a six week window Rudner was invited to perform. After the six week window, MGM built her a theater, then she went to a bigger venue at Harrah's. Rudner's been performing in Vegas since 2001, and has sold over a million tickets, and performed over 2,000.

As one reviewer put it, 'Rudner is a masterful comic and is able to seemingly, effortlessly entertain audiences with a lethal wit wrapped up in a soft-spoken delivery. Her clever observations, sharp timing and Gracie Allen-like style, captures her audiences immediately. The show seems to fly by. Her comedy is wonderful.'

As another reviewer also pointed out, 'The genteel, soft-spoken Rudner chooses not to ffuel a battle of the sexes so much as poke fun at both sides, and help them understand each other.' Yet another calls Rudner 'one of the best values in town, and one of the best shows in town at any cost.'
