Ralph’s World is the show from children’s songwriter Ralph Covert. Like the Wiggles, Ralph came from the indie rock world before doing music for kids (Covert came from a band in Illinois The Bad Examples).
Covert hasn’t left either his adult rock or children’s rock behind, and switches back and forth between the two, while touring with The Bad Examples for adults, and as Ralph’s World for kids. As he explains on his www.ralphsworld.com website, Covert has “taken the same high-energy and super-melodic sense that he developed for his touring pop-rock band to kid’s music – basically only the lyrics are changed for the ears fo the innocent.

Ralph Covert has also described his music as “McCartneyesque” for “both musically and his sense of charm.” Ralph’s World has recorded eight albums including All Around Ralph’s World, At the Bottom of the Sea, Happy Lemons, Peggy’s Pie Parlor, The Amazing Adventures of Kid Astro, Green Gorilla, Monster and Me, and the DVD Say Hello, which won Parenting Magazine’s Video of the Year award.
Covert also mentions on www.ralphsworld.com that he is the only children’s artist who has toured the House of Blues, and one of his adult songs, “Not Dead Yet,” was covered by Styx, who are also from Chicago, and it was also featured on the show Six Feet Under.
Flipping His Lid For Kids
Ralph Covert mentioned that his transition to children’s artist happened when he became a father, and he felt it would work out well if he transferred his musical sense with different lyrics for kids (now that his daughter is a teenager, she co-writes songs with him).
Covert has had a great variety of musicians help him in the studio including one of the drummers from The Smashing Pumpkins and Filter, a member of The Psychedelic Furs, jazz singer Kurt Elling, a member of Jonassay, and more. Covert knows his pop songwriting, and how to deliver it in a fun way for kids.
Ralph’s Other Good Works
Ralph Covert is also an author and playwright, including a rock musical, The Flower Thieves, and a children’s musical, an updating of A Nutcracker Christmas, as well as a musical version of Hansel and Gretel.
Covert has also written the books Sawdust and Spangles, Ralph’s World Rocks!, A Nutty Nutcracker Christmas, and Me and My Animal Friends. Covert has also been nominated for a Grammy for Best Musical Album For Children.
On one album, he even got the chance to cover his favorite song when he was a kid, “Go Go Pogo,” about the famous Pogo cartoon character. Recently, Covert did an interview answering questions for his young fans, and an eight year old asked, “Do you have a good luck charm that you use before your shows?” Covert responded, “My good luck comes from being so lucky to have so many people who enjoy my music, and are willing to share their love with me. That’s the best luck of all!”
