The National Football League (NFL) has many teams that claim the title of 'bad boys' but really only one that fits the bill. That is the American Football Conference (AFL) Oakland Raiders. How can a team wearing Black & Silver and with a pirate/biker on its helmet NOT be bad? But the Oakland Raiders boast some of the most devoted fans in professional sports despite moving between northern and southern California over the years.
The Oakland Raiders have won the Super Bowl three times (once while the Los Angeles Raiders) but even in losing seasons has usually been able to get spirited contests out of their hated AFL Western Division rivals the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. It has been enough for some long time and diehard Raider fans in a losing season to count these wins alone as victories enough.
Another rivalry, though from the National Football Conference (NFC), is with the neighboring team from San Francisco the 49'ers. This is as spirited as the Division rivalries and is also from the fact that the San Francisco team has won two more Super Bowls than the Raiders. When the teams play each other they are referred to as the 'Battle of the Bay' as the two cities are across the San Francisco Bay and are relatively infrequent. In the match ups Oakland has a slight edge in wins.
Attending home games members of the Raider Nation have been known to be among the most outrageously dressed fans in the NFL and other professional sports leagues. Favoring black clothing, masks, and lots of silver, including silver paint, the end zones of the Oakland Stadium become a famously named 'Black Hole' for opposing teams.
The Raiders fans call themselves the Raider Nation and in recognition of that fact the Raider Nation Celebration denotes the end of the training camp and the beginning of a new NFL season for the former Super Bowl Champions.
Billed as a family-friendly event with entertainment for the kids the event also has the Oakland Raiderettes, the team's famous cheerleading squad, and autograph sessions with current and past players and coaches.
