Wilder and Diamond were the brilliant team that gave us such classics as Sunset Boulevard, and Some Like It Hot, and with The Apartment, which later became Promises, Promises on the stage, they adeptly juggled comedy, romance and drama together in a witty package that swept the Academy Awards in 1960, winning Best Picture.
Promises, Promises first debuted on the Broadway stage in 1968, and it was produced by Broadway legend David Merrick, and choreographed by another stage legend, Michael Bennett. The play’s soundtrack album won a Grammy, and two of the show’s songs, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” and “Promises, Promises,” were hits for singer Dionne Warwick. Sixties versions of the play featured Jerry Orbach, Betty Buckley, Tony Randall, and Tony Roberts, where the current incarnation of the play features Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth.
Promises, Promises takes place in Manhattan in the ‘60s, and the play’s production design is wonderfully retro to go with the musical’s swingin’ sixties feel. A big reason for that swingin’ sixties vibe is the music of Burt Bacharach, who composed the music, and Hal David, who wrote the lyrics. Together they wrote many top hits including “My Little Red Book,” “Alfie,” “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head,” “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” and many, many more.
Neil Simon is of course another legend of the stage, and Promises, Promises is one of the many successful plays he’s written in his incredible career. His first Broadway play was Come Blow Your Horn, and he had four plays all running on Broadway at the same time, Sweet Charity, The Star-Spangled Girl, The Odd Couple, and Barefoot in the Park.
Other Simon classics include The Sunshine Boys, Chapter Two, They’re Playing Our Song, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues, Broadway Bound, The Out of Towners, California Suite, Plaza Suite, Lost in Yonkers, The Goodbye Girl and many more.
Promises, Promises won a Tony in 1969 for Jerry Orback, a Drama Desk Award for Oustanding Music, and a Tony in 2010 for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Katie Finneran).
