Based on the fantastic, phantasmagorical character of the title, The Phantom of the Opera is an incredible milestone in the career of Andrew Lloyd Webber, who also created the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Cats.
Because of the incredible successes of these musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber has been called the most successful composer in history, and Phantom of the Opera has become the longest running musical in Broadway history, as well as the biggest musicial in history.
The Phantom of the Opera has made over $3 billion dollars worldwide, and there have been more than 65,000 perfformances in 20 countries, 110 cities, and has been seen by over a hundred million people. Now the play is entering a new incarnation in Las Vegas, Phantom '“ The Las Vegas Spectacular.
A great musical can be with us, to quote the tag-line for Cats, 'now and forever,' and Phantom of the Opera has certainly been with us for a long time. In fact, most of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals, like Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Cats, have played for many years, and continue to be revived.
Coming into Vegas, a $40 million dollar theater was custom-built for the Phantom's arrival, designed by David Rockwell, who also designed the Kodak Theater and Nobu Las Vegas. The theater took nearly a year to build, and was built from scratch.
Legendary theater director Hal Prince, who directed Cabaret, West Side Story, Evita, Sweeny Todd, and who also directed the first staged version of Phantom, has also come aboard for the latest incarnation of the play in Las Vegas. As Prince has said, 'When the opportunity to bring Phantom of the Opera to Las Vegas, arguably the entertainment capital of the world, presented itself, it was the invitation you couldn't refuse.'
The theater was built to bring audiences into The Phantom of the Opera like no performance of it since. The entire theater has been built to look like the Opera Garnier in Paris with an 80 foot celeing, and opera boxes on the side with well-dressed mannequins, 70 in all.
The key centerpiece to The Phantom of the Opera is of course the chandelier, which cost $4.5 million to make and weighs over 2,000 pounds. The chandelier is made of over 29,000 pieces of crystal that were all stitched together by hand. All this to bring the chandelier crashing down, and with the theater designed to bring audiences closer in to the spectacle, theatergoers love it every time they see it.
This version of Phantom '“ The Vegas Spectacular is also a 95 minute version without an intermission, and as Variety as reported, 'The snips have been matched with zip, Phantom has been remodeled as a thrill-ride tuner with pyrotechnics, layer upon layer of bombast and a chandelier that dwarfs every lighting fixture ever assembled for this warhorse.'
Phantom '“ The Vegas Spectacular has been voted the #1 show in Las Vegas by Las Vegas Review Journal, and USA Today has hailed it 'an only-in-Vegas thrill ride.' The Toronto Star has written, 'Even if you think you've seen The Phantom of the Opera before, believe me, you've never seen it like this,' and The Chicago Tribute also wrote, 'There's no longer any reason to see this show anywhere else.'
