Sheboygan County, Wisconsin is welcoming the 2010 PGA Championship. Whistling Straits has hosted the annual PGA tournament before, in 2004, and will host it again in 2015. Peter and Alice Dye designed the two courses at Whistling Straits: the Irish Course and the Straits Course. Depending upon whom you ask, Whistling Straits is considered in either Haven or Kohler, Wisconsin. Some would say the town of Mosel. Officially, the PGA considers it in Haven. But the course's mail is sent to Kohler.
The PGA Championship is in a position to attract much attention. It is an elite tournament that formally forbids amateurs to participate. And although several club pro champs make the top slots, it is difficult to be invited. The top money players are accepted. But sometimes the officially highest ranked golfers are not granted entry. The championship has various difficult ways to get approved entry. In addition to winning one of the four Grand Slam of Golf Tournaments, the last Senior PGA champ, the last Ryder Cup team, and the 20 lowest scores from the last PGA Professional National Championship qualify. (There are a few other criteria that involve low scores in certain tournaments.) Yang Yong-eun, Padraig Harrington, and Tiger Woods were the last three winners of this tournament. (They won in Chaska, Bloomfield, and Tulsa, respectively.)
Unarguably, Whistling Straits is a beautiful course and is a frequent choice as host in the rotation for the PGA Championship. To many, presently, it's the unofficial favorite of the tournament. The PGA Championship is one of the four major championships. If a golfer wins 'the PGA,' then they are automatically accepted to participate in every PGA major for the next five years! That includes the Masters, British Open, and U.S. Open! Plus the golfer is invited to the PGA Championship for life! (The winner also receives an invite to the Players Championship for five years.)
