The Legend of The Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup can trace its origins back to 1893, when the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston, purchased it for $50.00. It was originally awarded to the best amateur hockey club in Canada until the National Hockey League established complete control of it in 1926. The cup itself has a rather colorful history of being the guest of honor at wild parties in which people used the cup in a traditional manner as well as some occasions when food was fed to a dog at the Kentucky Derby from its silver bowl. In 1962, the cup was stolen by a deranged fan of the Montreal Canadiens. In more recent memory, six-time champion and Hall of Famer Mark Messier was known to have brought the cup along with him when he visited strip clubs.

When a team conquers the playoffs and then the league, there mark is engraved in hockey history as each and every name is carved into the trophy for eternal posterity. The memory of that triumph can only be described as timeless and, for some, a once in a lifetime chance to reach beyond the stars. The trophy stands three feet tall and weighs almost 35 pounds, but the success it measures is worth its weight in gold.

Past winners of the Stanley Cup Finals include such luminary teams as the multi-year champions the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Edmonton Oilers. While a glorious representation of the best of the league and the history of the NHL, the Stanley Cup Finals are indeed the crowning achievement of a season and, ultimately, an individual or team career. A ticket to see the Stanley Cup Finals is a hockey fan's best chance to watch the best of the best that the NHL has to offer fight a battle that is measured in the success of a single moment.
