When the intensity of the regular season in the National Hockey League winds down, the Stanley Cup playoffs are the ticket to the finals that is coveted by every team, as well as every fan of the NHL. The playoff competition is an all out, fiercely fought elimination tournament where NHL legends are made. There are many chances for a fan to buy their own ticket to the playoffs, as there are many games in the series. The Playoffs are shaped around a four round structure, in which the top teams compete to determine the best of a rousing seven game series. The first three rounds are the deciding factor as to which two teams from each conference will advance to the final round, dubbed the Stanley Cup Final.
The playoffs begin with a ticket sale frenzy that sets off the Conference Quarterfinals, which is divided into four separate match-ups in each of the NHL conferences. The round that follows the Conference Quarterfinals is called the Conference Semifinals, in which the top teams from each conference are pitted against the lowest seed still remaining. A ticket to one of these games is a chance to witness the ferocity of the NHL firsthand. Then the other two remaining conference teams separate into pairs. The ultimate ticket is one to see the third round. The Conference Finals, as they are known, place the top two remaining teams from each of the conferences in match against each other. Ultimately, the conference champions book their tickets to the Stanley Cup Final which is the biggest event in the National Hockey League and the most difficult ticket to come by in the entire season.
The playoff format now does not in any way resemble that of the past, as it has been open to reinterpretation. A playoff tournament has always used to determine the leaders of the conferences. In fact, the playoff from which the modern system is derived began in the 1993-94 season. Then there was yet another realignment of the division structure in the 1998-99 season. At this point, ticket buyers had even more opportunities to get a hold of even more unbeatable tickets, as it was now structured with three divisions per conference. This was an increase from the original separation into two. Now five wildcard berths open up placement in each conference.
With an increase in the number of unbeatable opportunities to witness hot hockey fire on the ice, any fan of the NHL can buy tickets to the playoffs today.
