Culminating from the results of the intense NHL playoff season, The National Hockey League Conference Finals are pitted against a team from the Western Conference and the victor from the Eastern Conference. The finals in the National Hockey League is broken down into a best of seven series. In late May, each year following the first two rounds of the playoffs and also before the Finals, the winners are determined from each Division. A ticket to witness this happen live is a memory that most will never forget.
In the years preceding the 1967-68 season, the NHL was only made up of a single division before 1967 followed by a period lasting through the 1973-74 season when the National Hockey League was separated into two divisions. This was quite different than the East Division and West Division and a definite re-adjustment for fans who were on the prowl for tickets to these games.
The East and West Divisions were renamed the Prince of Wales and Clarence Campbell Conferences after 1974. Starting off the 1993-94 season a new rule was dictated which stated that the geographic locations of conferences determined their name. This was more akin to fans of Major League Baseball and those interested in the NBA leagues. The respective winners of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.
Despite many changes to the way teams are divided in the National Hockey League, the tickets for the Conference Finals are only beaten in the desire of fans by the glorious Stanley Cup Trophy awarded to the annual champions. What was once a far more vague and confusing manner of separating the teams has grown and evolved into a far more advanced, yet simple, means of distributing the boundaries based on the geographic location for which tickets are sold to the fans of hockey. In the many years since the inception of this current system, players, teams, and fans alike have adjusted their thought process on the matter of organizing the league for even competition. It can never be said that fans of the National Hockey League are always looking for new and better ways to advance their favorite sport. It would seem that there will most likely be many more cycles of evolution in the years to come.
The Western conference and the Eastern Conference face off leading to the final two teams. The Prince of Wales Trophy is awarded to the Eastern Conference champions and while the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl is given to the Western Conference. The Stanley Cup Finals are played by the top two teams from each Conference.
