As a nod of appreciation for their loyal fans and season ticket holders, the league gives them an opportunity to be involved by allowing them to select a number of the team members that will participate in the game. In recent years, this process has become even easier as fans are able to vote using text message or website of the NHL. This provides a thrilling chance for the audience to determine what players once they buy their tickets. Each voter is allowed to cast a ballot for 6 Eastern Conference and 6 Western Conference players to appear on the starting line-up. Each voter is also to able to only vote for one player, if so desired. Currently, the coaches for each team are determined by whoever is leading their respective conference in point percentage at the time the game takes place.

Throughout the years, hockey's greatest players and biggest legends have drawn huge ticket sales to the NHL All-Star game. In 2003, Dany Heatly's performance in this event literally changed the rules and sport of hockey for years to come. After setting a record by scouring four goals in an All-Star game, he scored his fifth in a shootout at the end of the game. This shootout got such a huge and frenzied response from the ticket holding crowd, that the league soon decided that they would decide overtime games with a shootout, eliminating the possibility of ever ending with a tie.

Sadly, because of an agreement reached in 2005, there will be no All-Star Games held during a year in which the Winter Olympics take place. Therefore, there will be no game in 2010, but avid fans can already look to the future and buying tickets for the next event that will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2001, NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman promised the Carolina Hurricanes that if the season ticket base reached 12,000 they would be able to host an All-Star game. As this milestone has recently been reached, the Hurricanes will be delighted to host the thousands of hockey fans that will flood their city to experience this fun event.

The NHL All-Star game is an annual sporting tradition where the most skilled players in the league are assembled in a wild night of fun to entertain the avid hockey fans and sell tickets to a great event that could only happen but once a year.

When the game started in 1947, the set-up was different, as it put in opposition, the defending Stanley Cup champions against several players from the remaining five teams. In an effort to once again reward the fans and ticket holders alike, in the beginning the All-Star game was also hosted at the home team stadium of the current Stanley Cup champions. Consequently, no October 13th, 1947 the first event of it's kind delighted audiences at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. When the game first started it was played at the beginning of the season, but in order to promote the addition of six new teams and cities to the NHL, it was changed to the mid-season time slot that it holds now.
