The National Basketball Association Finals have been being held since the first regular season starting in 1946. The original name for the series was called the NBA World Championship Series. In 1986 the name was changed to the NBA Finals. The winning team is then presented the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

Once the eight teams have been determined from each conference and placed into there seeding positions the Quarterfinals begin. Each of the different finals consists of a best of seven series. The teams who win in the Quarterfinals move on to the second round or the Semifinals. The two teams who win in the semifinals move on to play in there respected Conference finals. The team who wins the Conference final is declared the Conference Champions and goes to play in the NBA Finals.

At the end of the regular season sixteen teams will make it to the playoffs. Eight teams from the Western Conference and eight teams from the Eastern Conference. The teams with the eight best records in each conference will play in the playoffs and be seeded one to eight. They will be seeded in order of there records. The team that has the best record in each of the three divisions in each conference is declared division champion.
