The National Basketball Association Finals have been being held since the first regular season starting in 1946. The original name for the series was called the NBA World Championship Series. In 1986 the name was changed to the NBA Finals. The winning team is then presented the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

Once the eight teams have been determined from each conference and placed into the positions and the Quarterfinals begin. Each of the series consists of a best of seven games. The teams that win in the Quarterfinals move on to the second round for the Semifinals. The two teams who win in the semifinals move on to play in thier respected conference finals. The NBA team who wins the Conference final is declared the Conference Champions and goes to play in the NBA Finals.
The NBA Finals are played in a 2-3-2 format, meaning the team with home court advantage will host the games 1, 2, 6 and 7, and their opponent hosts games 3, 4 and 5. The home-court advantage is determined in both rounds by record regardless of seed.

At the end of the regular season 16 teams will make it to the playoffs. Eight teams from the Western Conference and 8 NBA teams from the Eastern Conference. The teams with the best records in each conference will play in the playoffs and be seeded 1 to 8. They will be seeded in order of there regular season records. The team that has the best record in each of the three divisions in each conference is declared division champion.
