The NBA Rookie Challenge was originally called the Legends Challenge, but due to multiple injuries mainly on the older players the NBA cancelled it at the end of 1993. In 1994 they adopted what was called the Rookie Game. For five years the teams were comprised of only rookie players. The teams were named the Eastern Conference rookies versus Western Conference rookies. The players were assigned to teams randomly.
The Rookie Challenge is played during the NBA All-Star Weekend on Friday before Saturdays All-Star Game. It is the first game played during the weekend that starts off the action.

In the year 2000 the event name was changed along with the format of the game. The new name was called the NBA Rookie Challenge. The change in the format pitted first year players (Rookies) against second year players (sophomores). Since the change in format the sophomores have won seven straight games and eight of the last eleven.
