The Richmond International Raceway in beautiful Richmond, Virginia has played host to the dazzling event since 2007. Ever since 2007, the race has been named for the person who writes a winning essay in a contest that is held to coincide with Daytona Speedweeks. Jim Stewart, of Houma, Louisiana, was the first lucky winner that stood before those who had purchased tickets to the event, followed by Daniel Lowry from Columbiana, Ohio and then Mr. Russ Friedman from Huntington New York. A United States Army veteran from Clarksville, Tennessee named Heath Calhoun was the lucky winner of the NASCAR prize in 2010. Year after year the tradition continues on in the spirit of the original intention.
As a matter of annual tradition, the race is held on a night under the lights one Saturday evening in the early part of May. It used to follow directly after the February run of the Daytona 500. Then in 1991, the facility installed lights prompting the debate for the race to be held at night under the lights. The race was ultimately relocated to a beautiful date during the Spring for the event day to allow the cold winter weather to pass and make for a day of weather that was more conducive to the conditions required for a top level NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and the ticket holding NASCAR fans. The race was finally moved from the Sunday slot to a Saturday night and set a permanent date in the Month of May by 1999. While this shifting of dates may seem trivial to the average observer, the conditions under which a NASCAR Sprint Cup Race such as the Crown Royal 400 are integral to the potential success drivers and racing teams face when hunting for the Cup.
2007 brought the NASCAR Sprint Cup: Crown Royal 400 into the homes of millions of network viewers in the United States and also to a global audience. The fever was catching on and moving beyond the strictly cable viewing audience. But nothing could replace the genuine pleasure of presenting a ticket at the gate of the speedway in Richmond, Virginia and navigating through the sea of fellow fans; all dedicated to the ever burgeoning sport of motor sport action that blazes around various tracks in the NASCAR family in the best speedways on the globe.
Recently Jeff Gordon battled Kyle Busch for the victory lap in a grueling 400 but Busch dominated turns 3 and 4 and, in addition to being placed as the pole-sitter, surpassed both Gordon and the great Jimmie Johnson for a ticket into a victory lane with a finish of an impossible .755 seconds over Gordon. As Busch took home the honor of having his seventeenth cup in the Sprint Cup Series, Gordon followed just behind while being trailed by Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and then Carl Edwards to round out the top leaders of the 400. With NASCAR action like that, a ticket to Richmond has a value far beyond the number on its face. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Crown Royal 400 race at Richmond is a tradition of NASCAR excellence that should not be missed.
