The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club was established on December 4, 1909 and has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of tickets to generations of fans who continue on with the organization season after season, year after year, and decade after decade. The club was established in order to allow for the addition of a bit of French flare to hockey; specifically in the Montreal region of Canada. It was an area that was practically owned and operated by the dominant English clubs such as the Shamrocks, the Wanderers and the Victorias. While not French, the first owner wanted to establish a French Canadian organization in Refrew, Ontario. This ultimately lead to the establishment of the team in Montreal and the first chance to buy a ticket to see any such team at that point in history.
The nickname "Habs" was bestowed upon the team and translates from French as "les Habitants" which described the settlers in New France, which eventually came to be known as Quebec. The word Canadiens was also a term used to describe the locals, and the ticket buying public, based in Montreal.
In November of 1917, the Montreal Canadiens joined the National Hockey League and officially changed its name to Club de Hockey Canadien.
The Montreal Forum was built in 1924 at the same time tickets went on sale for the debut of Montreal Wanderers introduction to the NHL for the new season. At the time the Canadiens were playing out of the Mount Royal Arena, but a move to the Forum was in store due to severe electrical problems.
The Canadiens played in the Mount Royal Arena until 1926 when they officially moved into the Forum which the Montreal Maroons already called home. Due to the depression that overwhelmed the western world, Montreal had to sacrifice one of its teams. The 1937-38 was the last season to buy tickets to see the Montreal Maroons.
Maurice Richard joined the Canadiens in 1942-43. Teamed up with Hector "Toe" Blake and Elmer Lach and the team took off like a "rocket". That season they won 38 of 50 games, tied 7 and only lost 5 games all season. In the playoffs Richard scored 12 goals in 9 games during Montreal's victories over the Maple Leafs and Black Hawks. The Canadiens now had their first cup since 1931 and the City of Montreal had their first cup since 1935.
Starting with the 1955-56 season, the Canadiens took anyone with a golden ticket on a once in a lifetime journey beyond excellence that remains indefinitely unparalleled. 5 consecutive Stanley Cups in five years proved the undeniable might of the Montreal Canadiens. The league was forced to change the rules about a penalized player returning to the ice after the team with the power play scored. Prior to the change, Montreal could rack up three or four goals. A Montreal Canadien won the scoring title and in each year the Canadiens allowed the fewest goals against for four out of five years. There accomplished three clean sweeps, and in the 1960 series they won 8 straight games. A decent ticket was always a hard thing to come by when Montreal won the cup in 1965 and 1966, followed with even more cup victories in 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1973.
The Montreal Canadiens have continually set a standard that remains unparalleled in the annals of NHL hockey. The investment of a single ticket to see them play has always been worth its weight in hockey gold.
The Canadiens played their first game at the Jubilee Arena in January 1910 and defeated the Cobalt Silver Kings in front of hundreds of locals who had bought a ticket to see the opener. Their first Stanley Cup victory came on March 30, 1916 as they defeated the Portland Rosebuds.
