It is great fun to watch the Home Run Derby. It is intense watching the big guns of Major League Baseball pelt the grandstands with towering long balls. The contest doesn't get old, seeing who, on this given day, has the best bat for homers and will be known as king of the slam for the rest of the year. The Workout Day at the ballpark is like catching a glimpse into the practice habits of the All-Star hitters and seeing them turn-it-on for a heavy-hitting competition to see who can hit the most home runs.
When Fielder upset Pujols, in a past Derby, he noted, "It's what I was expecting," Fielder said of Pujols' home-field advantage. "This is Albert's stadium ... so I was happy I was able to put on a show." Of course it is easy to be humble when you've just hit the longest long ball in the history of the competition: 503 feet! Fielder had never hit one over 500 feet before, no one had. The Derby is about breaking records.
Derby Day is a great glimpse into the practice habits and concentration levels of some of MLB's most thoughtful sluggers. Under the controlled environment, with its single goal, which is to crank home runs over the fence, one can really grasp the amount of power and control needed to pinpoint long balls over the fence. But, mostly, it makes one realize what a great invention the curve ball was. Workout Day underscores the finesse of baseball by showing the brute power of what its best players can do when pitched successive fastballs. Plus, fans have plenty of chances to catch themselves or a loved one the best ball game souvenir in America: a major league baseball.
The big home run hitters of the League come into Home Run Derby Day expected to do great things and in many cases things get exciting. Surprises happen. Remember Prince Fielder shocking the 46,000 fans recently and besting the great Pujols? Anything can happen on Derby night.
With a sellout crowd chanting for their hometown favorites, players really give the extra effort to please. Every player comes to expect to get booed (it's part of the fun), if they are a rival slugger.
