The History Of Major League Baseball
The game became more popular as the game was refined in 1920's and the rise of the legendary New York Yankees which featured players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig who helped make baseball a household name. Since the game's official inception into the world of sports, the Yankees have remained the most dominant team of the sport, winning up to 27 World Championships including one in 2009. In recent years, baseball is often competing with the National Football League for popularity in America. In 2008, the demand for MLB tickets set a record by grossing $6.5 billion.
An American Pastime
Baseball is the nations oldest pastimes and an embedded part of the American professional sports culture. Baseball has been played in the United States since 1870 after the game was invented by Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York which is now the home of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
American and National Leagues
MLB teams are divided between the American League and National League which each have three divisions within each league. The divisions are East, West, and Central. At the end of the year the leading teams of each division meet in post season play in the first round of the playoffs which includes a Wild Card team which is the fourth best team in each league. The winner of first round of playoffs than meet in the divisional title game in the second round for the league title series. Then the best of the National League meets the best of the American League in the Fall Classic known as the World Series. The first world series was played in 1903 between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans (later known as the Boston Red Sox) in which Boston won.
