In July, from all over Wisconsin, golf fans swamp Brown Deer. They come from the suburbs'”Grafton, Cedarburg, Jackson, and Whitefish Bay. They even come from Chicago. They all come to see the very popular Milwaukee Open. It is a must-see tournament for Wisconsin golf fans. Nearly the entire State takes special notice. It is the most popular golf championship Milwaukee has ever produced. Now called the U.S. Bank Championship and played just outside of the city limits, this tournament is glad to be part of the regular PGA tour. It is a proud little tourney with a vast historic sense of itself.
We will notify you by email when your tickets become available.
U.S. Bancorp is the major sponsor for the Open. The purse that was recently not very high, has been growing a lot in recent years. It is up to 4 million dollars. Milwaukee has had a long, slow road to respectability in PGA circles. The history of golf in Milwaukee is best described as sporadic. Yet, the history of the Greater Milwaukee Open is worthy of praise. And, the future of this Championship is hopeful. It is building upon a strong local support. The tournament has a soft spot in the hearts of players too. At the height of his popularity, Lee Trevino played the GMO instead of the British Open, because he wanted to give the fledgling tourney a publicity boost. It worked.
The Open has been celebrated at many different host courses throughout the State of Wisconsin. Some of the most beautiful courses in Wisconsin have been part of this championship tourney. Today, it is played at Brown Deer Park. It has also been at Tuckaway, North Shore, Tripoli, Blue Mound, and North Hills Country Clubs. (It is the tournament where Tiger Woods made his quiet professional debut, August 29, 1996. It is where Ralph Guldahl, Jim Thorpe, and Bo Van Pelt have all become champions.)
