The PGA hosts an annual event for professional golfers and their sons (or daughters) to play in two-person tournament matches. (Fuzzy Zoeller is responsible for the tournament title becoming fuzzy: his daughter Gretchen was his partner in '05.) The event remains a favorite among golf fans with children. It is expanding in size and popularity. It was a two-day event with an 18-hole round per day. The 2010 Father and Son Challenge has been expanded to 72 holes over 4 days.
What Jack Nicklaus once said about the event rings true. 'I think spending time with our kids is what we'd all like to do.' Dads teach their children golf. They hope that they can share in a love of sport together. And unlike most other sports, golf is a sport that is easy to do one-on-one. Just grab the clubs and go. This tournament is an opportunity to talk golf philosophy. It is an opportunity to learn and teach. It is an opportunity to let kids see golf in action and ponder what it is all about. The Challenge is to become confident about the game of golf together, to see it played well, but also to see mistakes being made and learn from them.
The Father and Son Tournament (to be played at St. Andrews) hosts golfers from around the world'from Sweden to Japan, Malaysia to America. The courses for this event include Crail Balcomie, Kingsbarns, and St. Andrews'in prestigious Scotland!
Many legends of the game of golf enjoy the family atmosphere of the Fathers and Sons Games. Fans look forward to it for much the same reason. It brings family and golf together hand-in-hand. In 2009 when the event lost its sponsor, many were truly disappointed. Now, back in swing, in 2010, the love for this event is obvious.
