Mary Poppins Coming In For a Landing On Stage

Mary Poppins was one of Walt Disney’s proudest film achievements. It was the #1 movie of 1964, and it was Disney’s biggest moneymaking movie for many years. Now the musical magic hits the theater stage. The stage version of Mary Poppins debuted in England in September 2004. Julie Andrews caught the show in March 2005,and gave it her seal of approval. Additionally, Dick Van Dyke caught the play opening night in L.A., and gave it a similar rave.

The reviews for Mary Poppins have called it “high-flying spectacle,” it “can’t help but be delightful,” “an explosion of song, color and dance,” the play “weaves its own brand of magic,” and is an “eye-popping delight…superb production values and a brilliant cast.” The magic of Mary Poppins has remained timeless, and has clearly translated well to the stage, with its great music and wonder intact. In a word, it’s a supercalifragilisticexplialidocious stage experience.

Mary Poppins is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

In addition to the elements of Mary Poppins you loved from the film, the stage play also has the wonderful music composed by the Sherman Brothers, Robert and Richard, who have won two Academy Awards, and also wrote music for The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, The Parent Trap, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (they also wrote the Disney classic “It’s a Small World”).

Mary Poppins went to Broadway in 2006 after premiering in England in 2004. In addition to earning the approval of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the play has also been nominated for seven Tonys (winning Best Scenic Design of a Musical), two Olivier awards wins, as well as being nominated for Drama Desk and Drama League awards.

Mary Poppins is also the first time Disney has joined forces with Cameron Mackintosh, who also produced Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Les Miserables. The play book for Mary Poppins was written by Julian Fellows, who also wrote the movie Gosford Park, which he won an Academy Award for, and also wrote the Reese Witherspoon film Vanity Fair, as well as the best selling novel Past Imperfect. Mary Poppins director Richard Eyre also helped stage adaptations of Hamlet, Guys and Dolls, Richard III, and many other theatrical classics.
