Mark Knopfler was born in 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland. He formed Dire Straits in London in 1977 with his brother David Knopfler. Their eponymous debut album was released in 1978 to little if any fanfare. Britain was in the grips of the punk rock explosion and there seemed to be no audience for its intricate guitar pop that sounded like it was from another age. It was not until "Sultans of Swing" was released as a single in Holland that the album gained any audience at all. The United States was much less in the grips of punk and the clean, classic sounds and expert songcraft found a ready audience on FM radio. The rest of Europe and Canada followed. All this caused Britain to finally sit up and take notice of this fine band that were right under their nose without recognition. The album reached #2 on the Billboard charts and eventually went to #5 in the U.K. Though not released as a single, the album's lead track "Down to the Waterline" received significant airplay in the U.S., bolstering sales. Dire Straits went on to be MTV superstars, especially with the video for "Money From Nothing," helping to propel third album "Making Movies" to multi-platinum heights.

After Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, Mark Knopfler began his solo career. His debut solo album, "Golden Heart" was released in 1996. His 2000 release, "Sailing to Philadelphia" is his most successful solo album. It has sold over 3 million copies. Knopfler worked with many special guests on the album, including Van Morrison, James Taylor, Gillian Welch, and Glenn Tilbrook & Chris Difford from Squeeze. He is currently on tour in support of his ninth solo album, 2009's "Get Lucky."

Mark Knopfler's 2010 tour takes him to the Warner Theater in Washington, DC, the Orpheum Theater in Boston, the United Palace Theater in New York City, and to Philadelphia's Tower Theater. The European dates include the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, a six-night stint at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Lotto Arena in Antwerp, the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo, the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, and the O2 Arena in Prague.
