When golf champion Fred Couples hit 23 million in winnings, 4 million of that was from winning the LG Skins Game! The PGA does not recognize the skins game for the 'money list.' But it's worth a lot of money to the players. And the fans are obsessed with following the outcome, often emulating it on their private links back home. The LG Skins Game uses a 'match play' format. All the holes on the course are assigned a money value. If a golfer has the best score on a hole, he gets the money for that hole'”all of it. If there is a tie on a hole, things get very interesting'”mathematically and competitively. Mr. Couples is known as 'King Skins' because of his utter domination of the tournament each and every time he plays. He has won approximately seven skins at each of the almost dozen Games he has played.

Some very fun moments are part of the history of the skins game. Lee Trevino's hole-in-one in '87 caused a sensational stir of excitement and increased the interest in the game. In 2001, when the 'outright win' rule was put in place, Greg Norman won all 18 skins. No one has equaled Norman's record. The first skins game was played in 1983. The line-up for that year was four of the biggest names in golf history: Watson, Nicklaus, Player, and Palmer.
The Skins Game is vastly different than a regular PGA tournament event. That is why it is played after the regular PGA season. And only four golfers are invited to the showdown. Much like the Grand Slam of Golf, the LG Skins game is reserved for especially great golfers to make the match as exciting as possible. Yet, the skins game, depending where it is played, has much more potential money on the line. It is just like watching a friendly country club gambling match, but the stakes are huge and no one puts up their own cash. Some of the rules and hole assignments are slightly confusing to some fans, but the excitement is undeniable. Each hole is a battle that is won or lost. If tied, the battle carries to the next hole to be won or lost. If tied again, the battle moves, the cash increases, and the tension mounts.
