Kathy Griffin’s act is usually dubbed “Life on the D-List,” and she’s taken her own life on the D list, and turned into an A-list career. Like Chelsea Handler, Griffin had made great comedy out of the stupidity of celebrity, and it has turned her into an A-list celebrity herself.

Kathy Griffin stands out strong as a comedian. Her trademarks are listed on the Internet Movie Database as: “Fast-talking rants on a variety of subjects,” and “red hair.” Both descriptions put it mildly, especially the hair, which should be described as “vibrant, flaming red.”

Like Chelsea Handler, Kathy Griffin’s comedic observations are very sharp, and right on target, and Griffin’s also loud and boisterous, but that’s where the similarities end. Griffin is her own woman as a comedian, and carved her own unique path into comedic stardom.

Upgrading From D to A list

There are many people like Griffin in Hollywood who exist on the fringes of show business for years, and get a lot of little breaks, but never the big break everyone hopes for. The big break came to Griffin much later in life, but as her current success has shown, when it finally came through, success came through big.

She first started out in the early ‘80’s with The Groundlings, where a lot of talent, like Jon Favreau and Phil Hartman, first start out. Kathy Griffin also did acting roles in long forgotten movies like the horror flick The Unborn, and she also had a tiny scene in Pulp Fiction, and little by little, she kept piling up movie and TV appearances throughout the ’90’s.

Then came HBO Comedy Specials, and a recurring role on Suddenly Susan. She also started making fun of her self-proclaimed “D-list” celebrity status, and her act making fun of it, and other celebrities started attracting a lot of attention. Many of her favorite targets include Paris Hilton, Clay Aiken, former TV cohort Barbara Walters, Celine Dion, Paula Abdul, Britney Spears, and many more.

As Griffin has accurately pointed out, “A lot of stars don’t have a sense of humor,” and “a lot of celebrities, especially when you’re talking about the really big ones, live in what I call the fame bubble. Nobody ever says no to them, or challenges them, or even teases them.” Both reasons are why Griffin loves plucking their wings. “If something funny happens, I can’t resist,” she has said. “I have to tell people.”

A List Comedy From The D List

Kathy Griffin’s humor has also caused her a great deal of controversy, like dropping the F-bomb on CNN during New Year’s Eve, being denounced by the Catholic League for a religious joke, getting banned (then un-banned) from The View, getting banned from the Apollo Theater in New York, getting fired from E!, and more.

But who ever thought Kathy Griffin’s humor was safe and predictable? More importantly, who wants it safe and predictable? Not to mention how can you punish anyone who is already on the D list? Oh wait a minute, Griffin stopped truly being D list a long time ago. Not that it will ever tone down her hilarious and outrageous sense of humor, and her fans love her for it.
