Jubilee! Is a celebration of showgirls, who still perform all over Las Vegas, and have for many decades. Jubilee! first opened in 1981, and has reportedly been the longest running show on the Vegas strip (according to one report, it is also 'the last authentic showgirl revue in the city.'
Jubilee! features 85 girls, clothed and topless, featuring costumes desgined by Bob Mackie and Peter Menefee, and well as a fully dressed show for families. You want to see a great tribute to the long-standing tradition of showgirls with showstopping numbers, costumes and beauty, Jubilee! is the show to see.
Jubilee! was directed by Donn Arden. Arden has been listed as one of 'The First 100 Persons Who Shaped Southern Nevada.' He didn't create the phenomenon of showgirls, but he brought the phenomenon to Vegas (there were showgirls on Broadway in the Ziegfeld Follies in the '20s).
Jubilee! is a still standing testament to his showman instincts, as well as the grand, over the top nature of many Vegas shows since he first brought Lido de Paris to Nevada in 1958. One writer also said Jubilee! 'will not doubt be the last show of its kind in this increasingly high-tech era.'
Lido de Paris, which was a well known cabaret in the Champs Elysees, opened at the Stardust Hotel in 1958. Showgirls have been around since the 1860s, but Arden was the first showman producer to bring them over to Vegas. Jubilee! came over the the Tropicana Hotel in 1959, and it became the longest running show in Vegas history.
Along with Arden's showbiz vision comes Bob Mackie's wonderful and wild costume design. Mackie has designed costumers for such prestigious performers as Judy Garland, Cher, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Katy Perry, and many more. He's been called 'the sultan of sequins,' 'the rajah of rhinestones,' and he's also said, 'A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed.
Costumes for Jubilee! also include the talents of Peter Menefee, who has designed costumes for Barry Manilow, and the opening ceremony of the 2002 XIX Winter Olympics.
Vegas is often known for being over the top, and Jubilee! is not only a wonderful point of reference where over the top shows in Vegas began, but it is also a lasting testament to the old ways of Vegas, that are still just as fun as ever.
As one fan wrote, 'The Jubilee revue was a first class, outstanding show. The dancing, choreography, stage sets, and costumes, were awesome.' Another reviewer dubbed it 'classic glitz,' and yet another called it 'a classic Vegas spectacular, crammed with singing, dancing, magic, acrobats, elaborate costumes and sets*and it's the only showgirl spectacular left in town.'
Jubilee! is a wonderful, fun trip back in time when Vegas was brassy, wild, high rolling,' and you could still see Frank, Sammy and Dino live in the flesh. The legends of Vegas were just starting to echo through the hills, and Jubilee! is a fun reminder they're still hanging around.
