Comedy Central and Youtube sensation, ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is on tour this summer. Tickets are available now to see this popular funnyman with all his sidekicks: Peanut the purple Micronesian, Bubba J the redneck, Walter the curmudgeon, Melvin the Superhero Guy, and most famously, Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Jeff Dunham's summer tour will bring him to venues like the Pacific Amphitheater in Los Angeles, the New Orleans Arena, the BOK Center in Tulsa and the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego.
Jeff Dunham concerts start up with a warm-up session of stand-up comedy. Yes, Jeff Dunham "opens" for his puppets. This is quite a tease because, after all, everyone's come to see their favorite puppets. But the stand-up is funny and serves its purpose, loosening up the audience for the main act. The sarcsastic old man Walter comes out first, complaining about his wife (and everything else in general). Peanut is a hyperactive reprobate and tormentor of Jose Jalapeno on a Stick. Sweet Daddy Dee, ostensibly Jeff's manager, is a pimplike manager. Bubba J is beer-swilling, NASCAR loving trailer trash. Melvin the Superhero Guy doesn't seem to actually have any super powers. When Jeff asks how far he can fly, the reply is "How far can you throw me?" He derides other superheroes as "show offs" and says that Aquaman "can't do anything Spongebob Squarepants can't do."
But the fan favorite is clearly Achmed the Dead Terrorist, with his catch phrase "Silence! I kill you!" Achmed is a skeleton often surprised by that fact: "What happened to my feet?!" Often he wonders, "where are all the virgins I was promised?" Jeff and Achmed, together, perfectly update the lost art of ventriloquism, a once hugely popular vaudeville schtick that pretty much died with Edgar Bergen and his puppet Charlie McCarthy. Jeff Dunham updates ventriloquist comedy for a new audience that demands shockingly ribald comedy. Fan comments reviewing Jeff Dunham online are nearly a non-stop litany of: "rolling in the aisles," "laughing so hard it hurts," and unfortunately "wetting oneself from laughter."
Jeff Dunham has been doing ventriloquist comedy since the sixth grade. In high school he even "co-wrote" a column in the school newspaper with a puppet. He was a local sensation in his native Dallas, often hired for parties by various Dallas Cowboys players. He appeared in many television commercials for local auto dealerships. After college Dunham made his debut on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson," even being invited over to the couch, the famous sign of Johnny's approval. Since then, he has appeared many times on David Letterman's programs and had many Comedy Central specials. His Achmed the Dead Terrorist video from his "Spark of Insanity" DVD is the ninth most-watched video ever on Youtube.
