Human Nature is a four singer tribute to Motown from a wonderfully unlikely place, Australia. Human Nature are reportedly most popular vocal group down under, and now they have their own show on the Vegas Strip paying tribute to the wonderful sounds of Motown.
In fact, their interpretations of Motown hits were so strong, Motown giant Smokey Robinson was completely blown away and had to get involved. Smokey is presenting Human Nature's Motown tribute here in the States.
Human Nature are four singers, Toby Allen, Phil Burton, Michael Tierney, and Andrew Tierney, who first came together in 1989, performing doo-wop in high school. They signed a deal with Sony Music in 1994, and their debut album came out the following year.
It was a huge success, going quadruple platinum, and becoming the most successful debut album in Australia's history. Human Nature would also have four #1 albums in a row. So how did they cross paths with Motown and Smokey Robinson?
As it turns out, Human Nature auditioned for Smokey because they wanted permission to cover one of his songs. 'When I saw these guys, I was blown away,' Smokey said. 'They're just awesome.'
Human Nature came over to America in 2008 and are the first Australian group to have a show on the strip. What Robinson especially liked about them was the fact that Human Nature performed old-school style: just four guys singing classic songs, with no vocal-altering tricks.
The Motown hits Human Nature perform include 'The Tracks of my Tears,' 'Reach Out (I'll Be There),' 'Stop in the Name of Love,' 'Wait a Minute Mr. Postman,' 'My Girl,' 'Get Ready,' 'I Can't Get Next To You,' 'What's Going On,' and 'ABC' to name a few.
They've certainly met Smokey Robinson's approval, which is as great of an endorsement as you can get, and Celine Dion is also a fan, calling them 'wonderful vocalists who really know how to entertain a crowd.' What do the reviewers and fans think of Human Nature?
One fan who saw the show wrote online that if you're a Motown fan 'and this show doesn't get you out of your seat, then you must be dead.' Another fan wrote, 'They make the songs new again and Motown has never sounded or looked better.'
Yet another fan wrote, 'We've had the pleasure of experiencing Human Nature three times in Las Vegas, and look forward to the next. Toby, Phil, Andrew and Mike are exceptional singers, great dancers and endearing performers.'
The music of Motown is timeless, and it's just as wonderful today as it was back in the sixties. Thanks to Smokey Robinson, he's been able to bring a great new interpretation of the music to America, guaranteeing Motown's legacy will continue to live on. If you want to relive the music and the magic yourself, there's no better show to catch in Vegas than Human Nature.
