Both Green Day and AFI (A Fire Inside) are punk rock veterans of the East Bay, California Gilman Street scene. This tour will be like old times for aging punk rockers, and a chance for younger punks to get a taste of what it was like way back when. Green Day have been rocking nonstop since they formed 23 years ago. Same story for AFI, rocking hard for the past 18 years. Both bands got their start at the famous 924 Gilman Street venue in Berkeley, California. "Gilman", as it is affectionately known as, was one of the only all-ages venues in the area for young punks to see their favorite bands. Gilman opened its doors in 1986 and continues to this day.
Green Day were punks long after everyone said punk was dead. They, along with AFI, were part of the new generation carrying the torch for teen angst. They were fresh and vital, more influenced by the pop punk sounds of the Descendants than the brutal hardcore of the day. They released two records for local punk label Lookout! Records, "39/Smooth" and "Kerplunk" in 1990 and 1992, respectively. "Kerplunk" was an indie hit and attracted major label attention. They signed to Reprise Records in 1993 amid cries of "sellout!" from many of their fans. "Dookie" was released in early 1994 and proved to be the band's breakthrough hit, with three tracks, "Longview," "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around" getting massive exposure on MTV and college radio. The album was a Grammy winner for Best Alternative Album that year. Anyone who was alive and conscious that year could not escape its infectious pop punk grooves.
AFI formed in Ukiah, California in 1991. In the best punk tradition they didn't even know how to play their instruments. After a break to attend college, they released their first album "Answer That and Stay Fashionable" in 1995 on Wingnut Records. The second album, "Very Proud of Ya" was released in 1996 on Nitro Records. While neither of these releases achieved anything near Green Day's monster success, they were both enjoyable, shambling pop punk. They toured the country in support of their records and earned a devoted fan base. It was not until their seventh album, 2006's "Decemberunderground" on the major label Interscope that AFI finally found mainstream success. The single "Miss Murder" reached number one on the Modern Rock charts and the album itself debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart.
Both bands have new albums that are winning them still new, ever younger fans. Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" and AFI's "Crash Love" were both released last year. You can expect to hear many songs from these hot new releases as well as all your classic favorites!
