The Fall Series PGA tournament once hosted by Grayhawk Golf Club is now called Frys.com Open. The 2007 event was a close match, won by Michael Weir by a single stroke. After Kevin Sutherland's bogey finish in 2008, Cameron Beckham eked-out victory, avoiding a third playoff hole. And in 2009, Troy Matteson wowed the Scottsdale crowd with his double 61 second- and third-round shooting to both win both the last playoff and overall tournament. (He also set a 36-hole PGA record!)
Among top resorts slated for the PGA's next fall tour, CordeValle may have been chosen because of its reasonable rates, in keeping with Fry's commitment to make this tourney become more accessible to golf fans to attend. The golf course is uniquely underdeveloped. Trees cover the course. The landscape has been only slightly re-vamped to allow for the terrain of the course and maneuverability of its patrons. Before this area was a golf course, it had been an 18th century vineyard of some renown.
Fry's was responsible for bringing Superstar golfer Phil Mickelson back to Fall Series PGA golfing (a section of the tournament year he is known to skip), due to the location of the course in his hometown, Scottsdale, when the tourney was held there. Rumors are flying that tournament organizers are extending Mr. Mickelson every invitation to attend this event, albeit relocated. Fans are definitely hoping he is part of the Open.As far as PGA Fall Series events are rated, the Fry's is gaining momentum. Now pursing at 5 million, with its frequent playoff rounds, and the inclusion of more and more respected golf stars, the Fry's Open is set to continue for a good number of years. Golf fans are hoping the sponsors keep the spirit of the past (The Electronic Open and Grayhawk Golf Club) with the tournament into the future.
2010's Fry's Open is to be played this fall at CordeValle, San Martin, California. This event is located very near Fry's Headquarters in San Jose and stretches across scenic canyons on a nice course designed by R. Trent Jones. CordeValle is a foothills course known for its sponsorship of UCLA golf. Its board has had distant ties to this open dating back to the days it was played in Las Vegas. The move by Fry's has been called, 'temporary.' The well-run resort has a unique and enchanting setting. Small hamlet-like bungalows line the outskirts, acting as the resort's hotels. The golf atmosphere is luxurious, replete with spas and practice greens for visitors.
