The FleetBoston Classic became the Bank of America Championship in 2004. Then, in 2008, the Classic ceased to be part of the PGA tour. While the FleetBoston, the tournament procured three champions: Allen Doyle, Bob Gilder, and Larry Nelson twice. In its later years, this PGA event was cancelled due to rain in 2006. It suffered from diminishing purse, waning interest, and odd sponsorship decisions. At age 50, Jeff Sluman, its last champion, won his first championship there, when it was called the Bank Of America Championship. The final championship ended with Jeff Sluman at 17 under, Loren Roberts at minus 15, and Dana Quigley tied with Mark McNulty at 11 under par. The victory ended a winless streak for Sluman. Until his 2008 victory, Sluman had trouble winning on the Champions Tour. ('Champions Tour' is for senior golfers, once known as the 'Senior PGA Tour.') From 1981 to 2008, under the following names, this tournament was part of the Champions Tour: Bank of America Championship, FleetBoston Classic, BankBoston Classic, Bank of Boston Senior Classic, Digital Seniors Classic, Digital Middlesex Classic, and it originated as the Marlboro Classic.
