Fences Tickets

Fences by August Wilson is one of the most powerful shows to be brought to the stage in years. The play revolves around Troy Maxson. He's a former Negro Baseball League player who is living a troubled older life. He feels trapped, as if he is suffocating in the life he's chosen. Troy has three children, one of whom is the illegitimate daughter of a secret mistress. Needless to say, things aren't looking good for Troy.

Plays like this don't come along all the time. August Wilson's has written a story that tries to make the audience feel the intensity of one man's struggles with himself and the society that surrounds him. It's not hard to understand why everyone wants tickets to see Fences live.

Fences paints a no holds barred portrait of the 1950's in America. August Wilson plays have always been popular, but this one is especially poignant. The African American experience as presented by Fences is exactly what makes for the most intense drama. This play is actually part of a cycle of ten plays by Wilson, and has come to be known as the Pittsburgh Cycle. However, Fences stands on its' own.

This is not a show that features the singing and dancing that has become commonplace in most Broadway theaters. It's a commentary on American society as seen through the eyes of one man. This is the art of drama written and performed at the peak of perfection. Troy is someone a lot of people can relate to. He is not a bad person but has just made a few mistakes that have had a profoundly negative impact on his life. He's made his bed and now he has to sleep in it.

In 1983, Fences debuted and quickly became a prize winning show in many places. With thousand of tickets sold to every staging of the play, August Wilson's Fences has won Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987 for Wilson.

Fences by August Wilson is a dramatic commentary on race relations that could not be more relative today that when it first debuted. The struggle for African Americans to achieve racial equality has obviously come a long way since the time that Fences takes place. The subject matter is still as important as ever and has been described by many as an enlightening experience that lasts even after the audience leaves the theater.
