The Edmonton Oilers are an NHL team that has won the Stanley Cup More times than you can count. The oilers are a legendary NHL franchisee that has hosted some of the world of hockey and the hall of fame players most teams dream of.
1977-78 was the season in which the WHA and the NHL went head to head, the results of which culminated with the demise of the WHA. Only four teams were sent to the NHL with the Oilers among them. This was the season that the Oilers made a definitive mark of hockey history when they drafted teenage superstar Wayne Gretzky to the longest multi-million dollar contract in NHL history. In front of 12,000 fans who had no idea what their ticket had bought them, Gretzky signed the deal as he celebrated his 18th birthday. In their final season in the Oilers managed to finish first in the league with 98 points and Gretzky finished 3rd in the scoring with 46 goals and 110 points. Despite an amazing debut performance in Edmonton, Gretzky was ineligible for any rookie award because of his having played in the WHA. Had he been able to participate in the rookie awards, he would still hold the record for most points by a rookie. The Gretzky train was the ticket to ride.
Gretzky stunned the hockey world in 1981-82 by signing a $20 million contract for the next 15 years, making him the highest paid NHL player up to then. He then proceeded to score a record 92 goals, 120 assists and 212 points. Gretzky also took home the Art Ross and Hart Trophies. A ticket to see the Edmonton Oilers meant see Wayne Gretzky prove his hockey greatness and elevate the sport to new heights.
The following season, anyone with a season ticket witnessed the great Gretzky as h continued his dominance by capturing the scoring title for a third straight season. As a team the Oilers set a record for the most goals, 424 and three Oilers, Messier, Anderson and Gretzky all had over 100 points. The Oilers went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals but were defeated by the New York Islanders.
1983-84 allowed fans a front row ticket to see Gretzky lead the league finishing the season with 87 goals, 118 assists for 205 points. In addition, the Oilers as a whole broke their team scoring record with 446 goals and went all the way to the Cup finals, this time defeating the New York Islanders in 5 games.
Wayne Gretzky would go on to reach the 1000 point mark in just his 423rd game and the Edmonton Oilers have continued to pave their own path to greatness within the NHL.
In their second season, the team was renamed the Edmonton Oilers and the organization finished the season with 38-37-3 record, keeping them in third place and out of the playoffs. Fans still raced for tickets to see the Oilers, as hockey was what they cared most about; not initials!
