The Red Wings Alumni are just that '“ a group of selected past members of the Detroit Red Wings team in the National Hockey League, as well as other NHL players along with few ex-college hockey stars. They all generally live in the Michigan and Ontario area and have banded together over the years in a non-profit cooperation and raise money for charity. The sale of tickets to these exhibition games are a must have for any hockey fan, in particular those who come to pay tribute to some of the greatest men to ever play the game of hockey.

Legendary player Larry Aurie lived nearby, as did Larry Cain and many other alumni. They gave their blessing to Tommy Emmett who was, at the time, a member of the Detroit Lions Alumni Association. For those who never had a chance to by a ticket to a regular season game when one of these players graced the ice, and even for those who had tickets to one of the countless Detroit Red Wings playoff games and Stanley Cup finals, this would be a wonderful gift. Cain took on the role of Red Wings Treasurer and immediately set of the non-profit.

While the organization was only originally established to last for a period of thirty years, they became such a success that they filed for an extension in 1990. Currently, the Red Wings Alumni meet monthly to share old war stories and plan for future events for which fans and supporters can by tickets to support a charitable cause. Approximately 25 games are now played per year and the alumni have a great amount of fun while on the ice and raise up to $100,000.00 annually for their causes.

It is important to understand that, despite a lot of familiar names - some even legendary, these players did not command the million dollar plus annual salaries when they played. This is their chance to be charitable contributors without affecting their everyday lives. The Detroit Red Wings Alumni have raised countless amounts of money and had the pleasure of selling golden tickets for fans who want to see them play their favorite game. The alumni are also made of players from other local teams such as The Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whales, and Edmonton Oilers among others. What better chance could any NHL fan have to see these hockey greats that by purchasing a ticket to see the Red Wings Alumni and their friends spread their wings once again on the ice?

On April 21, 1960, the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association incorporated after realizing the amount of good they could do to help those in need. Essentially, they realized that a great amount of their fellow players still lived in Ontario and the Great Lakes region and they found a great deal of camaraderie was always present when they would gather at the Butcher's Inn. It was a sandwich shop that was located in the Eastern Market section of Detroit, Michigan. Time passed by and it became more than clear that they could have a strong impact if they officially banded together. It was not only an opportunity to spend time together, but fans of the Detroit Red Wings, and NHL in general, are extremely loyal and would pay anything for a ticket to see the Red Wing Alumni team show themselves on the ice.
