Collected Stories is a drama written by Donald Marguiles about a writer and her protege, who in the course of six years goes from student to established writer, and uncovers personal secrets of her teacher in her work.
We have great seats for Collected Stories and we have gotten rave reviews and as one reviewer states, “If you’re looking for intelligent, well crafted, beautifully structured playwright, peppered with dialogue that rings totally true, the season should offer Donald Margulies regularly, and we’d all be nourished and satisfied. Not since Lillian Hellman has a playwright emerged with the ability to consistently tell a good story, peopled with interesting characters who involve us – we join them on their journey – we can’t help ourselves.”

Collected Stories was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and has featured Debra Messing, Maria Tucci, Uta Hagen, Linda Lavin, and Helen Mirren in various stage incarnations. Collected Stories has proven itself a great showcase for stage talent, and as the New York Times raved, “The emotional current between the performers takes on a sweeping, electric life of its own…you won’t forget the blend of pride and vulnerability that infuses every moment on stage.”
Donald Marguiles is a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright who is also a professor of English Literature at Yale. Marguiles won the Pulitzer for his play Dinner With Friends, and his other works include Time Stands Still, Shipwrecked! Brooklyn Boy and Sight Unseen. Collected Stories has also won the Drama Critics Award for Best Play.
Margulies’ family went to a lot of Broadway shows when he was child, even though his family didn’t have a lot of money. Marguiles majored in play writing in college, and his first play, Found a Peanut, was a collaboration with Joseph Papp, the legendary theater producer and director.
In balancing the complex issues of Collected Stories, Marguiles has said, “I empathize with both sides of the argument. I don't come down on either side of the argument. I think part of the pleasure that audiences derive from theater is not to have solutions handed to them, or to be told whether something is right or wrong. For me one of the great pleasures of experiencing this play in front of many different audiences is watching audiences argue about the issues of the play. You have to suspend certain etiquette when you are a writer, and that is part of what is discussed throughout the play.”
Collected Stories was first performed in 1996 at the South Coast Repertory, and it premiered on Broadway in 2010. In addition to its many acclaimed performances in America, Collected Stories has also been performed around the world in cities such as Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, Sydney, Melbourne, Copenhagen, Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw.
