Ka is one of several Cirque Du Soleil shows that have come to Las Vegas. Along with The Beatles: Love, and Viva Elvis, Cirque Du Soleil is one of the themed shows that makes going to see Cirque Du Soleil a uniquely wonderful, and wonderfully unique Vegas experience.
Ka is a major extravaganza that cost over $200 million to develop, more than even the biggest epic theatrical films, including building a theater for Ka for $165 million, and over a million theater-goers have seen Ka since it debuted in 2005. Live onstage, Cirque du Soleil has created an incredible, epic story.
Like a Hollywood big budget extravaganza, Ka tells a story of upheaval, of chaos and balance, the power to create and destroy, yin and yang, and how power can be used for good or evil. What's also remarkable about Ka is that the play has no dialog, and tells an epic story all through martial arts, dance, effects, puppets, pyro, video screens, art design, music and sound (the Ka team features 80 people who bring the show together).
The story of Ka is based in Asian folklore and is about twins, a man and a woman, brother and sister, who are separated during a country's political upheaval. The Ka of the title refers to your spiritual duality that follows you in this life, and into the next, and to fire that can destroy or enlighten you.
With Ka, Cirque du Soliel again has brought together a great mixture of state of the art staging, music, dance, and performance, to present a remarkable multi-media story. With the $165 million building of the theater in Vegas, the Ka staging has lifts and platforms, as well as several floating stages and decks.
Ka is the creation of Robert Lepage, a Canadian playwright, director of stage and screen, and actor. Ka is a groundbreaking stage show like no other before it, and there's nothing on the big screen or on the stage anywhere that compares to it.
One Ka reviewer raved, "A new chapter in the history of the American stage begins with Cirque du Soleil's Ka. Attempts to compare this production to any other form of performance diminish the genius of this masterpiece Ka is a story told in movement, but not in words, but so different from traditional ballet that it could easily be classified as a new genre of performance art altogether."
On the official Ka website, Robert Lepage has said, summing up the appeal of Ka and Cirque Du Soleil at the same time: 'What is it about the circus that so captivates us? It's a discipline in which the performers must always go beyond. We witness the transfiguration of the human being. In the short time they are in the air, or performing acrobatic feats, circus artists become more than men and women "they are demigods, and we are transported into a world of mythology." All of this sounds like the journey that will transport you when you see Ka.
