Celine Dion is one of the biggest and most popular singers in history with over 200 million albums sold, and a dedicated following all over the world. Inspired by the Cirque du Soleil show O, Celine Dion signed up to perform in Vegas in 2002, and she's been performing there ever since, to the delight of her large, and loyal fan base.
Celine Dion was born in Quebec, one of fourteen children. The family didn't have much money, but Celine recalled her upbringing as happy. She was named after the song Celine by Hugues Aufray, a French singer.
Celine Dion has said, "I had one dream: I wanted to be a singer." Her family had a piano bar, and Celine grew up singing there, and she wrote her first song with her parents when she was 12. All her life she wanted to be a singing star.
Dion's brother got a demo of her voice to Rene Angelil, who would become her manager and husband. He loved her voice, and mortgaged his home to finance her first album. Suddenly, she was a star in Quebec, but it would be some time before she broke through in the States.
Dion eventually learned how to sing in English, and released her first English language album in 1990, and it yielded Dion's first American top ten hit, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now." Dion also had a big breathrough dueting on the title track of Disney's Beauty and the Beast with Peabo Bryson, which became her next top ten hit and won the Academy Award for Best Song.
In 1994, Dion broke through with the number one single "The Power of Love", and 1996's Falling Into You Album included thetrack, "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", covers of "River Deep, Mountain High" and "All By Myself." The album was a huge hit, selling over eleven million copies in the States, and the follow up album, Let's Talk About Love, sold ten million copies in the States.
In 1997, Celine Dion had a monster hit with the theme song from Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On", a number one song all over the world that won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe awards for Best Original Song, as well as two Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Perfromance, and Record of the Year.
Dion's career is still going strong after all this time, and when she came to Vegas, it was a major event, even for a city used to mega entertainment events. Her show was inspired by the spectacles of Cirque Du Soleil, and the show is produced by famed Cirque Du Soleil mastermind Franco Dragone. Her years in Vegas have proven very successful, selling out tons of shows, and wowing her fans.
In reviewing her Vegas show, The LA. Times mentioned the hefty price tag spent on the show and "the money is all on the stage here, present in one magnificent theater," and that the show has "the most extraordinary special effects in town." Dion's voice was "right on the money," and stating the obvious, "She's got a heck of a voice and she is a true entertainer in the best sense of the tradition."
